Stoolbeds: The "Cutting" Edge for Hybrid
Poplar
Hybrid poplar are a fast growing species,
suitable for forestation projects in North East
Saskatchewan.
Interest in the establishment of hybrid
poplar plantations has outstripped the supply of propagation
material.
In 2001 members of Parkland Agroforesty
planted their first stool beds to provide hardwood cuttings
for this growing market.
The hybrid poplar varieties Walker,
Assiniboine, Hill, Green Giant (Brooks Number 6), Northwest,
Okanese (WP69), Prairie Sky and Tristis are currently being
grown. Additional clones will be added
in the near future.
Parkland members also produce rooted
cuttings and container stock for sale.

Cuttings
- Hybrid poplar non rooted:
Hybrid poplar will grow,
under suitable conditions, from “cutting” material taken
from current year growth. Parkland growers maintain stooling
beds of selected hybrid poplar varieties from which they
harvest suitable propagation material in the form of cuttings.
The standard length for a
Parkland hybrid poplar cutting is 10 inches. Material is ranged
in size from 3/8 to 3/4 of an inch in diameter.
Cutting material is
harvested after dormancy in the fall period, processed and
stored in controlled atmosphere storage until spring
distribution.
Rooted Hybrid Poplar
Cuttings:
A higher establishment
success rate is achieved from cuttings that have been field
rooted for one growing season.
This allows the cutting to establish a vigorous root
system that will allow it to establish under more adverse
conditions. Rooted cuttings have improved establishment and
growth rates.
Container stock –
Hybrid Poplar:
Cuttings can also
establish a root system when grown in plug trays under
greenhouse conditions. Container stock is grown for one season
in the greenhouse and once dormant in the fall it is lifted
and stored under controlled atmospheric conditions.
Container stock also has a
much improved survival and growth rate over un-rooted
cuttings.

Other Products:
Container Stock - Willow Varieties Willow propagation
material is also available in addition to hybrid poplar.
Willow varieties will grow best from a rooted propagul that
has been grown for one year in a greenhouse plug and harvested
when dormant in the fall. Parkland Agroforestry has
several willow varieties available, including Acute Willow,
and two varieties of the new fast growing hybrids, used for
bio-mass or shelterbelt trees. |
